Christmas Mice with Faux Shiplap Background Paper Technique

Hello and welcome!

It's my turn to host this week's Allsorts challenge and the new challenge starts today! The theme I chose for this week is... Wings and/or Tails. Lots of options here so hopefully you'll play along with us for a chance to win. We're giving away 2 Woodware stamps this week, so there will be 2 winners.

And here is what I made:

I recently mentioned that even though I have trouble coloring up digi stamps because of the ink smearing, sometimes I just can't resist them and this was another such occasion!

This cutie was a recent release from Rachelle Anne Miller (PS: Coupon code SAVING10 should give you 10% off your order), I just fell in love with these huge ears, these mice are just so cute, I just had to have this image!

I colored the image with my Faber Castell Polychromos pencils, which is what I usually have to do with digi stamps. I do love the softer look of colored pencils and enjoy coloring when I have time, but it does take some extra planning as I don't always have extra time for coloring. I've been thinking about purchasing a laser printer so I can use other coloring mediums but then I'd rather spend the money on stamps or inks instead of a printer since the printer we have now does work fine otherwise....

The background paper was done using an easy DIY shiplap paper technique.

It really couldn't be easier, all you have to do is score heavy weight card stock at about 3/4 of an inch apart using a scoring tool (press hard for deep score lines) then use an ink pad of your choice to create a wooden texture. You hold the ink pad flat so you can ink up the raised (scored) lines and then naturally the ink pad will also touch some of the card creating a wooden look. I used Pumice Stone Distress Oxide ink on this card, but have done this with the Weathered Wood ink pad before. I've first learned of this technique from Karen's blog

The sentiment comes as part of the digi stamp, here I added it under the striped paper scrap. The heart frame die I used is by Avery Elle. I would have loved this star frame die more, but I don't have it yet and it seems like very time I place an Amazon order I forget about it!!

  9. I'm stopping by from the Crafty Catz blog after linking up my own card. This is ADORABLE!!! Such cute little mice and that heart frame frame them perfectly!! The stars would have looked fabulous as well. I love your soft colors and the rustic look your background adds. I've done that technique before but have quite forgotten about it. Thanks for the reminder!

  11. Cute and fabulous card, great tip for the background!
Have you ever tried to add clear embossing powder immediataly when the image comes from the printer ( and heat it ). Or just let it dry for the next day or maybe use the heater. I colour my digi-images with markers.
    Happy weekend;-))m

    1. I've done the heat embossing when I printed on vellum paper but the powder doesn't stick to the regular white card stock I use. I do usually print out a few days ahead of time but even then it usually smears. I think the humidity is just high here or something.

  21. You did a great job creating this adorable card. I hadn't heard about the shiplap technique but it looks so beautiful and rustic. And I agree those mice are too cute!!

Here's a tip for you. When I want to buy something from Amazon, I just put it in my cart. It will be there next time I make a purchase! There's also an option to "save for later" which I use often, too.

Thanks for sharing your Holiday Card with us at Cut it Up!

    1. Great idea with the shopping cart! Thanks for sharing! I've added things to the "save for later" list before but never actually use it. Probably should revisit that list...I'm sure there are things from years ago on there that are no longer relevant :)

  23. Oh, these little mice are so sweet and I love the layout. I used to have issue with digi's smearing the ink but now I print in Grayscale and heat set the ink with my heat tool before coloring with alcohol markers..no longer have that smearing problem. Thank you for entering your lovely project in our challenge at The Inspiration Station. Donna

I know what you mean about ink smearing. I did wait until my old printer died before buying my color laser printer, but I do love my printer.
