Misfits Market Box #2 - What I Received

Hello and welcome!

Two Wednesdays ago I shared some information about Misfits Market and reviewed my first box. My second box arrived last Wednesday and I decided to make it an ongoing blog post series where I share the box contests and how the produce was used (or will be used). I think it's easier this way to keep track of what we received and if we in fact are using up everything and that this auto delivery of produce is actually is helpful.

If you're not familiar with Misfits Market, here is a quick recap taken from their site:

"It's a subscription box of sometimes funny-looking, always delicious produce, designed to break the cycle of food waste. Think of us like an online grocery store, except one that specializes in rescuing food that is unnecessarily thrown away. We source high-quality organic produce that has a few quirks—onions that are too small, potatoes that are shaped like your favorite celebrity, and carrots that fell in love and got twisted together. It may sound like a joke, but billions of pounds of this fresh and delicious food is tossed each year because grocery stores only want "perfect" foods on their shelves. We step in and buy this food from hundreds of farms across the country and bring them to your doorstep, saving you money and helping you save the world."

If you would like to try Misfits Market, you can copy this code COOKWME-TT0TPG to receive 25% off your first box. While this post is in no way sponsored, I do also receive 25% off a future box when this coupon code is used. Misfits Market gives every costumer a coupon code like this to share with their friends and receive a discount on a future box.

Misfits Market is not yet available in all states. You can take a look here to see if your state is included.

Box No. 2 - What I Received

6 Apples
6 Oranges
6 Pears
2 Celery Stalks
5 Hot Peppers
4 Green Peppers
1 Box of Shishito Peppers
2 Small Bags of Fingerling Potatoes
3 Yellow Onions
1 Butternut Squash
1 Kabocha Squash
2 Bags of Green Beans
2 Cucumbers

Add On's I ordered extra:
1 Cantaloupe
1 Box of Strawberries

How we used these products:

  • With the Green Beans (both bags) I made a side of Asian Green Beans. This green bean side dish is one of my family's favorite and I've been following this recipe for a few years!
  • With the Fingerling Potatoes (both bags) I made a side of Pan Roasted Potatoes. No recipe, I just cut them in half lengthwise, placed in a little bit of hot oil and roasted in the pan.
  • With 1 Cucumber and 1 Onion I made Cucumber/Tomato side salad Again no recipe, I just slice with my mandoline slicer, dice the tomato and slice the onion, then add vinegar and salt as a dressing. I still have 1 cucumber left.
  • All fruit is eaten fresh. We still have 3 apples and 2 oranges.
  • 2 Green Peppers and 1 Hot Pepper were eaten with Sandwiches.
  • 1 Hot Pepper was added to an omelet. I still have 3 hot peppers left.
  • 1 Green Pepper and 1 Onion were used to make One Skillet Baked Spagetti (I switched it up a bit by skipping the melted cheese and added 1 green pepper instead, then sprinkled with Parmesan cheese, so mine wasn't technically baked.)
  • Green Pepper, 1 Celery Stalk and 1 Onion will be used in Beef Goulash I plan on making today. Similar recipe. (I don't usually add celery to this but will give it a try.)
  • 1 Celery Stalk was eaten fresh as a snack.
  • The Kabocha squash was cut into wedges and roasted in the oven. Here is a recipe, but I like mine plain with no oil or anything else added.
  • Still have the Butternut squash and will probably roast it at a later time.

Disappointments:

While I was overall satisfied with my box, I wanted to mention the couple of disappointments.
The strawberries were an add-on. (When you subscribe to a box you get the option to add on from a few select items that will then be shipped with your other produce.) One of the two items I added on was a box of strawberries. I should have known better as they are so fragile. Half of the strawberries were unfortunately smashed and moldy and had to be thrown out. I did take a picture of them and emailed to show costumer support and they refunded me the price I paid for the strawberries. I wasn't sure how quickly I would hear from them as I read a few reviews on their instagram that people didn't hear from them for awhile, but surprisingly I received my refund within one day.

The cucumbers and Butternut squash were mislabeled. The cucumbers were labeled as zucchini and The Butternut squash as Spagetti squash. But I didn't really mind and I recognized them for what they were, just wanted to mention it here.

The oranges weren't as juicy as they were last time but ok to eat.

Thoughts:
Last Saturday I decided to go from the "every other week" delivery to "every week", because we do eat most of the contests within one week and since I've cut my grocery shopping trips in half, this will be useful. It also helps me with meal planning as I can plan the meals according to what's inside the box.

Thanks so much for visiting!

  2. I am PICKY about my strawberries (my fave), and I could tell immediately from your photo (before I read what you wrote) that they weren't good! That is a bummer, but happy you got your funds back for them! Ever since COVID, we have had to order groceries online for pickup, and I cringe every time I order the strawberries, afraid I will end up with something like you got :)

    1. I don't know why I was imagining some fresh picked strawberries!! LOL! But glad I got my money back for them. They are just such a fragile fruit and last week's heatwave I'm sure didn't help much either.

  3. We got 4 things of celery in our last box and I was pretty stumped on how to use them all. I feel like the fruits and veggies aren't lasting as long now that the hot weather is here but overall we are still using 99% of it before it goes bad.

    1. That's a lot of celery. I received another one in my new box. Luckily I love snacking on it, but hopefully I won't receive 4 at once...but they keep well in the freezer and I always use celery in soup.

  4. Strawberries are so hard! I feel like they get over ripe really quickly this time of year! You got some great things with this box though!

    1. They never last long and I should really have known better! But happy with the rest of what I received.
      Thanks for stopping by!

  5. That is so much produce! And so fun. I guess with produce though you do run the risk of something getting smushed or bruised. I mentioned on your last post that we used to do a crop share like this with a local farm and you just got whatever they harvested that week so it was always a surprise. It was funny because we kept getting tons of radishes every week and we didn’t know what to do with them. But after some researching we found some really amazing radish recipes and they have become one of our favorite veggies to cook with. If you grill radishes wrapped in foil with a few spices or combined with some other veggies, they get all sweet and caramelized and they are so, so delicious! Thanks for sharing and linking up. I look forward to seeing what your weekly produce boxes contain!
