Fashion Over Forty: How I Wear Buffalo Plaid this Fall

Happy Friday! Hope all is well in your corner of the world. We had a fairly nice week, it started out chilly but yesterday was a beautiful day and I was able to finish up some garden work in my backyard. I still need to rake up some leaves in our front yard, isn't it funny - we don't even have a tree in the front, yet it seems like the leaves from half the neighborhood have decided to gather here 😄. Oh well, yard work is a bit of an exercise and now that group fitness has been cancelled once again, I can't complain about having to do it. It's now also required to wear a mask when when working out. And I'm sad to say that I'm considering putting our membership on hold until this restriction is lifted. I usually get a coughing fit about an hour into wearing a mask when out shopping so there is no way I could deal with a mask when working out. Does anyone else get a coughing fit with the mask on? I don't know if it's fibers from the mask material that I'm breathing in or what, but I'd be perfectly fine and then all of a sudden it hits me with this coughing fit and my eyes start watering. So weird! It even happens with my cotton masks from etsy. Nothing like standing in the checkout lane at the grocery store and having this happen...

But I better get to the point of today's post, my "fashion over forty" post. This outfit was inspired by one of Mireille's recent outfits, although I switched it up a bit to make it work for me. Mireille styled hers with a gray sleeveless top. She lives further south and probably still gets to enjoy some warmer weather, but here in Illinois it is too cold for sleeveless shirts even when covered up with a button down. (Minus yesterday, I was able to do my garden work in a t-shirt).

If you've been following along for a little while, then you might recall that this buffalo plaid shirt is actually my daughters. I shared an outfit with it some time at the beginning of this year, you can read that post HERE if you're interested.

On this day I decided to wear it with a "coral clay-ish" colored long sleeve shirt from Kohl's. This is a basic layering shirt by Mudd (old, but I'm linking to a few options below). I normally would prefer a v-neck, but really loved this color so decided to purchase it anyway.

While my shirt was purchased last year (or maybe it was 2 years ago??) Kohl's does still have some great options of layering long sleeve shirts:

SO Juniors Favorite Crewneck in Wine List (this color is close to mine but many other colors are also available)
Lands End All Cotton Crew Neck (many more colors available)

Essential V-Neck in Mysterie Orange (this is available in a lot of colors/prints)
Essential Crew Neck in Lilac (many more colors/prints to choose from as well)

The buffalo plaid shirt was purchased from Target and still available on their website. There are a few color options but this black and white is my favorite and I think it pairs well with just about any color.

My black skinny jeans are by Free People (old). These Slim Straight Jeans and these High Rise Skinny Jeans Jeans would be good alternatives and trendier options.

You've seen these Taos Retro Star sneakers a few times here on my blog if you've been following along. I've purchased these a few years ago, while this particular color is no longer available directly at Taos or Zappos, I did find them on Amazon in the exact color (khaki). Sizing up is recommended. I went up half a size and they fit perfectly. Love the fit and they have great arch support .

  2. Glad to be your inspiration! It is actually pretty warm today as it hit 70. But we did have some cold mornings all week long mid 30s not warming up till noon.

  3. That looks great together. We had nice warm weather today and I was just loving it. I can't wear a mask while working out; I don't get coughing fits but I do get light headed and feel like I have hard time getting enough air.

    1. Thanks Joanne. I don't always get the coughing fits, it's random and never know when they come. That makes me think I'm breathing in some random fiber from the mask on occasion, maybe it's make up residue?? I do wash and switch out my masks very often. Who knows what's causing it, but it sure is annoying.

  4. I love Buffalo plaid! I really liked Mireille's look that you copied and you look totally adorable in the way you have styled your plaid top! Our next door neighbors have the same leaf battle as you do! They have no trees in their yard but we have a giant oak tree in our back yard and the neighbors on the other side of them also have large trees. So their yard gets covered in leaves as well. My husband filled 31 leaf bags this year cleaning up after that old oak tree!

  6. I don't have anything in this print in my wardrobe but I see so much of it on US bloggers in autumn - it looks really cute! I've just never seen any pieces here in that print. :(

Thanks so much for joining the #WeekdayWearLinkup!

Hope that you had a wonderful weekend! We put all our Christmas decorations up :)

  7. The shirt is a great alternative to a jacket as an extra layer ! I couldn't workout while wearing a mask - they make my nose run after about five minutes! I workout at my home but my husband goes to the gym and doesn't have to wear one. Gyms, restaurants and non essential shops only reopened here today after another lockdown. We're still under restrictions though...I can't wait for the vaccine to be rolled out! Thanks for linking up!

  8. that shirt is a cute coverup on you! I love that 90s style is back, it looks really fun tied around your waist like that :)

It's a shame you have issues with the mask - I'm lucky we only have to wear them indoors here and we tend not to spend a lot of time in the stores so I haven't had the coughing fits you have, but when there are covid cases and we have to wear the masks outdoors I find them really tricky to breath in with the heat and humidity - not my favourite thing to wear!

Hope your week is going well so far :) It's a rainy one here!
