Fashion Over Forty: Orange Cardigan from TJ Maxx

This is not a sponsored post, however it includes some affiliate links, meaning I may earn a small commission if you purchase something through the links, at no cost to you! Thank you so much for your support!

I'm going to start by saying that I don't love this look! Whatever possessed me to buy this cardigan last month I don't know!! Do you ever look at yourself in the fitting room mirror and love how something looks on you, then you wear it and only notice you don't like the look until someone takes your picture? Well, this is what happened here. I found this sweater at TJ Maxx by Rachel Zoe. It is soooo soft and I love the knitted pattern plus I love the color (even though this fall Rust Colored Sweaters are everywhere instead of this reddish-orange.) But now that I'm seeing myself wearing it, I don't think it looks good on me. And of course I no longer have the tags or receipt so I can no longer return it.

But since the pictures were taken I decided to post them anyway. Maybe it's what I am wearing this sweater with that makes me not like this outfit....

As you know how fast merchandise moves at TJ Maxx, I don't have a direct link to this cardigan, but I'm linking a few orange sweater options below. You may also like this orange raincoat for this time of the year.

LOFT

The white tee I am wearing is also by Rachel Zoe, I picked it up at the same time I got the cardigan. As with the cardigan, I don't have link to this specific shirt, but if you're looking for a nice white  slim fit t-shirt with a v neckline (which is pretty much universally flattering) then check out this t-shirt at Target. It's currently only $8 and has great reviews!

My jeans are old, by Kut from the Kloth. This is a similar pair and they also come in Petite. My belt is by Fossil (also old). I did find the exact belt on eBay. If it's of interest to you, be sure to check sizing as there is only one available and it might not be your size.

I wore my black Miz Mooz lace up booties again, that I am sure you're getting tired of me mentioning how comfortable they are and made of the softest leather. I got them last year and they are no longer available at Nordstrom, but you can still get them directly at Miz Mooz. For a cheaper option do check out these Ebay listings. You might find them in your size for a great price! I'm wearing my usually size 8 (in case you're wondering how the fit is). I also really like these buckle ankle boots available from QVC. They are the same brand and I can imagine they must be just as comfortable as the lace up booties are.  I really want them but can't justify buying them.

My brown tote is by B.O.C / Born (old). This is a similar looking bag, but comes with a strap and can be worn as a cross body bag, while mine is a shoulder bag.

Necklace is part of a layering Necklace by Lucky Brand. It's no longer available, but Nordstrom has several gorgeous layered necklaces. I especially love this simple layered necklace. Eyeglass frames are by Coach.

Below I've included snippets of clothing/accessories that might interest you. Each image is clickable and will lead you to the store where you can find out more info about each item. Remember, some of these are affiliate links, meaning I might earn a small commission if you buy something through the links, but at no cost to you.

I had a cardigan like that, and only really liked it when I paired it up with chocolate brown corduroy jeans, boots and a creamy color top. Your cardigan is gorgeous, try it with warmer tones on the top and pants, you might like it better.

Thanks Julie.

Thank you, Carol! I was thinking the white tee is too white. Of course didn't see that before the pictures were taken. I used to have a pair of dark brown corduroy pants, but no longer do, so I'll try with a different shade of blue jeans.

Thanks so much, Mireille.

I love the colour of the cardigan and think it looks so good on you! it's a fun pop with the jeans and tee and I'm not sure what you didn't like about the photos - the cardigan is definitely a keeper I think!

Hope that you are having a great weekend! I went out to a fashion show last night, it was a lot of fun :)

Ellie, the cardigan looks beautiful on you! I love the color! In fact, I might check my own TJMaxx out for one this color as I have a rewards certificate. But I know what you mean about the dressing room/picture issue. That happens to me all the time! I love the way something looks like in a mirror but then when I see it in a picture I don't like it. That's why I do Stitch Fix! I don't buy it until after hubby takes my picture in it and I like it.

I agree with the other ladies who say this cardigan is a really great color on you! I've definitely had that experience though, where I love something until I see myself wearing it in photos. I think you should try styling it again before giving up on it entirely!

I think that cardigan is fantastic! If you aren't feeling it with this outfit, try it with a dress or skirt or riding boots and leggings! There are so many great options!

The fashion show does sound like a lot of fun, Mica. I'm not sure either what exactly is bothering me on this cardigan, I'm thinking it might be the jeans I styled it with :-)

Thanks Amy. It is a great color for fall! I didn't know TJMaxx does rewards certificates. But I don't get to shop there a lot as the store is out of town and I don't go often.

Thank you so much, Kate!

Thank you, Gina. Will try again with different jeans. It's too late to return it anyway so I might as well have some fun with it!

Oh I don’t think it looks as bad as you think it does! I love this color on you. It is very flattering. And the whole outfit is perfect for a Fall day of doing just about anything. But I can totally relate to what you’re saying. I have some outfits that look super cute in the mirror and then are atrocious when I photograph them. And vice versa. I have put together outfits that I thought were pretty boring and dull or plain old blah but photographed them anyway only to discover that they photograph brilliantly. So weird! It makes me wonder what is the reality...the mirror image, the photograph image or perhaps neither...Thanks for linking up with me!

I really like the cardigan, it's a lovely colour. Maybe you could try wearing it a different way, like belted over a maxi dress? Thanks for linking up!
