Misfits Market Box No. 3 - What We Received and How We Used the Produce This Week

Hello and welcome! I'm sharing the box contents of my 3rd Misfits Market box today. Just a quick note to those of you not familiar with Misfits Market ... it's a weekly (or every other week) delivery service of organic produce. The company best explains in on their site:

"It's a subscription box of sometimes funny-looking, always delicious produce, designed to break the cycle of food waste. Think of us like an online grocery store, except one that specializes in rescuing food that is unnecessarily thrown away. We source high-quality organic produce that has a few quirks—onions that are too small, potatoes that are shaped like your favorite celebrity, and carrots that fell in love and got twisted together. It may sound like a joke, but billions of pounds of this fresh and delicious food is tossed each year because grocery stores only want "perfect" foods on their shelves. We step in and buy this food from hundreds of farms across the country and bring them to your doorstep, saving you money and helping you save the world."

As mentioned in last week's Misfits Market post, I went from an 'every other week' delivery to a 'weekly' delivery because we ran out of most veggies before the two weeks were up. I don't know if I'll stick with the weekly delivery, but it's easy enough to change back to every other week if I decide to.

If you would like to try Misfits Market, you can copy this discount code: COOKWME-TT0TPG to get 25% off your first box. Please note, this post is in no way sponsored, but when you use this code, I also will earn 25% off a future box. This isn't because I am a blogger, in fact they give a discount code to each one of their costumers to share with their friends. Just a heads up though, they do not deliver yet to all States, you can take a look here to see if your state is one of them.

What I received:

4 Roma Tomatoes
2 Bunches of Collard Greens
3 White Onions
2 Packets of Green Beans
1 Jicama (took me a bit to discover what this one was!)
3 small Red Beets
8 small-ish Red Potatoes
8 Carrots
1 Bunch of Celery Sticks
2 Heads of Cauliflower
3 Mangoes
4 Oranges
6 Apples

How The Produce Was Used:

  • All green beans and red potatoes were used in this Baked Chicken dish. I usually use carrots and was going to use the ones I received, but noticed the beans didn't look the freshest and I decided to add them instead of the carrots.
  • The carrots and celery stalk were eaten fresh as a crunchy snack. I already had the carrots peeled thinking I was going to use them with the chicken (see above), so I just added the celery sticks and we snacked on them while watching the X Factor on Hulu
  • 1 Tomato and 1 Onion were used to make Cucumber Tomato salad as a side salad to Beef Goulash (with a cucumber I had left from the previous delivery).
  • 2 Tomatoes and 2 Onion were eaten with sandwiches and grilled hamburgers.
  • 1 Cauliflower was used to make Cauliflower Casserole (I followed this German recipe - the link is in german but can easily be translated in google translate).
  • 1 Cauliflower was grilled and eaten as a side with grilled hamburgers.
  • 2 Mangoes were eaten fresh in the recent days. They didn't seem quite ripe when they arrived so we waited.
  • 5 Apples were eaten fresh.
  • 3 Oranges were eaten fresh.
  • The Jicama was partially eaten raw and I boiled some of it. This root vegetable was new to me, in fact I had to do a google search to find out what it was. It's being described as tasting a little bit like a mix of a potato and an unripe pear. And it's just how I would describe it too.  I tried it raw but didn't know what to think of it ... liked it better cut into cubes and boiled like a potato. It actually tasted good with salt and pepper. Not sure what I'd serve this with as it does have a little bit of  a sweet taste to it. If you are familiar with this root vegetable, please let me know in the comments how you use it. I can imagine that I might receive one of these again some day....

I still have left:

1 Mango
1 Apple
1 Orange
3 Beets (I didn't like the beet chips I made a few weeks ago - they never turned crispy like they should have! May use these to make red velvet cupcakes for father's day - my husband loves red velvet cake)
Part of the Jicama

Disappointments:

Nothing much really, just didn't need or expect 2 cauliflowers (one of them was huge) but they were used up well. Also the beans looked like they needed to be used up very fast (which they were).

Thanks so much for stopping by!

I love to see how you used the different produce. We ate jicama when we lived in Mexico but I haven't bought any while living in the US. I've been cutting my veggies up to start snacking more healthy and either dip them in dressing or humus.

I just got a jicama in our box today and I couldn't figure out what it was until I just read that here and looked it up! I too find that we use up almost everything they send us within just a few days to a week even with the big box of produce.

It really is, I have not decided yet if I like it or not :)

Have fun exploring the uses of the Jimaca. I'm currently eating more of it raw and received another one in yesterday's box. It may not taste like chocolate covered strawberries but I figured it's packed full of vitamins so I can't let it go to waste.

Thanks Heather, I too enjoy seeing what's in each box as I never know.

I am tempted to try Misfits as I like trying new combos of stuff and most of it is stuff we eat anyway. Thank you for all of the details of your usage; it gave me some good ideas.

You are really efficient with your use of all the produce! I would always be afraid that I would waste too much. But you seem to be really getting the most out of it! Thanks for sharing and linking up.

Thanks Kathy! It gives me a reason to try a few new recipes which sadly I otherwise don't really attempt to do. It's been working out great for us so far!

Thanks Shelbee! It's funny but for some reason I used to waste more produce when purchased at the grocery store. Now that I know a new box is coming, and I making sure to use (most of) it before the next box arrives.
