Fashion Over Forty: Black Ponte Knit Pants for Winter Travel

Happy Friday!

We recently had to take an almost 4 hour (one way) drive to Milwaukee (and back home), and when trying to decide what to wear for the trip, I remembered reading a post a while ago titled something like "the best pants for travel" where the blogger mentioned black Ponte Knit Pants and that's what I decided to wear.

You may wonder what Ponte Knit Pants are - these pants are double knit with two way stretch that won't bag out. Some are a pull on style some come with a zipper and button with practical pockets. They are available in a skinny, straight or bootcut. Due to the way they are made they can be dressed up for the office or a night out and the stretch double knit makes them most comfortable for long car or air travel.

We don't usually take such long car rides in the winter so this was my first time trying out these pants for a long car ride and they did not disappoint. Due to the double knit they also kept me warm enough while taking a walk along Lake Michigan on this day when it was just around the freezing point.

I don't have the best photos to share as the purpose of this trip was to take my daughter to Milwaukee Ballet for an audition. We did stop at the Milwaukee Public Market to get some lunch, but other than that we just walked around downtown while she was at the audition. We also decided to drive back home the same day as winter weather was in the next day's forecast and I didn't feel like braving winter weather on the road for almost 4 hours.

Everything I'm wearing is old but I will try to link to comparable items for those of you interested. My Ponte Knit pants are the zipper and button style with regular side and back pockets from White House Black Market. This is the exact pair but they are no longer available.

January skies are often gray here in the Midwest and I like to brighten up the day by adding a colorful sweater. You might have seen this sweater before in this post where I styled it with blue jeans and a black vest. The sweater does fit tightly on the body but not in a constrictive way and the material is super soft so the turtleneck never bothers me. As everything else I'm wearing, the sweater is old and was a hand-me-down from my sister.

I thought wearing a turtleneck was more practical than adding a scarf, although I did bring one along with me as I wasn't sure how windy it would be. I remembered being in Chicago during January some years ago and it was very cold and windy.

My down puffer coat is by Calvin Klein also several years old. It's a very light warm- gray (almost white) color. I know some of you worry about getting a lighter colored coat dirty quicker. While I hate when make up rubs off onto the collar, it washes out easily with Dawn dish soap and an old toothbrush. After this step I just throw it in the washing machine. It does need to run through the dryer for a few cycles and I always use dryer balls when drying down coats/jackets.

By the way, Nordstrom has some wonderful winter puffer coats in their winter sale currently, and as always their free shipping and return shipping applies to all orders!

My black boots are the ankle boots by Earth Origins I purchased from Amazon last Fall. There wasn't a lot of snow on the ground so they were perfect and kept my feet warm with a pair of boot socks . As recommended on the site, I ordered the boots half a size up.

My hands were freezing, I left my gloves in the trunk, not sure why I thought I wasn't going to need them, it was after all only about 32 degrees (Fahrenheit).

Thanks so much for taking the time out of your day to stop by my blog!

Ellie, you look so cute and cozy! This is a great outfit for hours in the car. I always like to be comfortable but still styled for long rides and bright sweaters and comfortable pants always seem to make me feel best! How did the audition go?

I often think ponte is an unrecognized gem because it holds its structure so well and gives a chic finish! Love your cozy parka too.
